Have I Seen That Before?

It is so true that everything in Fashion comes back around. I fell in love with this Miu Miu shirt which became a kind of "It piece" for the season. As with so much in fashion, it wasn't an original idea. I don't think Miuccia Prada was scrolling through Etsy but here is a 1980's pattern that's pretty much identical. It is just a tiny example but it has happened so much in Fashion History, not just contemporary details.

1920's vs. 1960's

The boyish silhouette of the 1960s was a mirror of the 1920s. The decades before them both was ultra feminine and silhouette focused so the next refreshing thing would be no silhouette at all. You can see   the dresses shown above are nearly the same; dropped waist, loose bodice and soft fabric. They also are both in sync with the Hemline Index.

1930s vs 1970s

So much of the 70s is directly inspired by the 1930s, all those poofy sleeved maxi dresses and wide trousers. We can see the dress Twiggy modelling above could be a 30's authentic dress with the leg-of-mutton sleeves and covered buttons.  Socially, both decades where not of financial stability so the floaty, glamorous clothing was an escape from the reality of so many peoples situations.

1900's vs 1950's

Christian Dior himself said he was inspired by the way his Mother dressed in the Belle Epoque period. The ultra feminine hourglass silhouette was the cusp of the "New Look". It was all about feminine luxury after a period of austerity.

So now in 2016, minimalism and clean lines have been on trend for a couple of years now. So this year and into the next few seasons, it's going to be all about maximalism and embellishment. Say bye to Norm-Core.

  3. I adore this post, that Miu Miu blouse was and is a dream item for me, I can only wish of owning it! I've never really thought of the parallels in fashion between these eras before, and I am especially a lover of the 60s/70s currently yet before reading this post I would never have thought that inspirations for those iconic eras stemmed from even further back, very interesting!x
