Dungarees- A Classic?

So often these days, I hear people who wear dungarees say that they're dressed like a toddler or that they are uncool. I don't think it is the case. Many girls and boys I know wear them like they wear skinny jeans, dungarees have become a wardrobe staple for many. Whether you wear them because you want to be Alexa Chung or you love that 90's chic, it is a garment with a pretty rich history.

The term  "Dungaree" is actually first seen in the 17th century referring to a cheap cloth worn by the lower class. The overall we know today originates in early 20th century America. Think Of Mice and Men style workers. They were workwear into the 1940s and we then see women wearing them as Land Girl uniform. They were considered a "fashion item" in the 60's and 70's and have continued to be worn in varying degrees of popularity, peaking again in the 90's.

Probably in the last 2 years they have surged to have the status they do now.  Street Style, Celebrities, Editorials, they are accepted by most people as a basic. So, in my opinion, they can be added to the list of classic garments. Even better when worn with a white shirt and a trench coat.

Do you agree?

  1. I guess many people say that because they were dressed in dungarees as a toddler, it still is a staple in nearly every mothers clothing of choice. Basically indestructible and easy to clean...
