Vetements

My attention was first drawn to Vetements shortly before the face of the brand, Demna Gvasalia, was appointed creative director at Balenciaga, throwing him into the spotlight of mainstream media. After watching their AW15 presentation, I was so drawn in by their refreshing take on fashion in a "traditional" fashion city. They showed their collection in Le Dépot, an underground gay sex club. Pretty florals contrasted with the dirty, gritty backdrop in a way reminiscent of 90's grunge but definitely OTM. The oversized, reworked shapes are so current in today's culture. The DIY ethic is being seen in art and music too, here in Nottingham there is a thriving DIY Punk scene. The distresses and distorted silhouettes inspire, showing us we can all cut up a jacket and make our very own statement piece.

The youthful, idealistic approach of the designer collective is, in my opinion, what is making Vetements so successful. It really stands up against the classic giants of Parisian fashion and makes high end in tune with youth culture in a way someone like Chanel just can't- fresh blood was needed. The future focus on fashion is no longer the glitzy glamour but a more down to earth, real aesthetic.
