You will need: Jeans, Scissors, Pins, Tape Measure, Fabric Marker and a Sewing Machine.
1. Cut up and around the inside leg seam.
2. Mark where you want to sew it back up to. I sewed just short of the finished length so it would have a little split.
3. Trim of the thick seam edge of where the jeans were originally sewn. This is because most standard sewing machines won't go through something that thick, skip this if you have a really powerful or industrial machine.
4. Sew the fronts together, right sides together, to where you have marked.
5. Sew the back seam a little longer than the front seam.
6. Sew the front and back seams straight. This was the gusset of the jeans so there is going to be excess. It is best to try it on and pin the excess than just guessing.
7. Cut the hem to how long you want it.
8. This is the basic skirt, hem it if you want or leave it raw which looks the best with the next steps. The next steps are optional but I would recommend it.
9. Make a few parallel slits all over the skirt where you want the rips to be.
10. Put the skirt in the washing machine to fray all the edges. I just put it on the shortest cycle possible. Then use tweezers to pull out all the blue threads between the parallel slits. The best video to explain this better is here.
There you go! I have actually added a few more rips since I finished this post, but there is your basic jeans to skirt. Easy right?
